What is Reading Apprenticeship?

Reading Apprenticeship is an instructional framework focused on developing engaged, independent readers.  Within this framework, teachers strive to create a classroom where the normally invisible process of reading becomes visible.  In a Reading Apprenticeship classroom, teachers often model their reading processes and knowledge.  Students are then guided in collaborative or individual practice of these reading processes.  This approach allows for the gradual release of responsibility from the teacher to the students.

Reading Apprenticeship focuses on four different dimensions; Social, Personal, Cognitive, and Knowledge-Building.  These dimensions provide a solid foundation for creating confident students who have positive reading identities.

Our reading experiences vary from person to person as well as in the different content areas.  Below are links to articles that address how readers have to use different skills for reading based on the content that they are studying.
